A subversive person is a rebellious person. The leaders of the school thought that because Ms. Watson was opening the girls' minds to new art and different experiences that she was trying to cause trouble. Subversive people would be considered troublemakers and rebels.

Betty was most definitely not happy with her marriage to Spencer. He was always gone on "business" which ended up being his mistress. Not only was she having to deal with such an awful husband, but she was being forced to stay home by her mother. Her mother had no sympathy for her situation because back in this time period, it was extremely shameful to get a divorce and importance was very important. Especially for higher class people like Betty's mother.

  1. I agree with you! Betty's mother did not want the reputation of their family to be ruined. I also think that Ms. Watson being described as "subversive" is not true. She wasn't purposely rebelling just to spite the leaders, but in their eyes any way different than their own was "subversive".

  2. Betty's mother did think of shamefulness about Betty if she were to consider divorce. She wanted to keep her image and her hopes were not to become an embarrassment. Also, the staff thought that Katherine was trying to cause havoc onto the school and through the students, creating a subversive view.

  3. For your first answer I am going to agree with you because Katherine was not a rebellious person just because she was teaching things her way. Even if she was doing things that were rebellious in their eyes, she handled the situation appropriately. And, for the second one, I am also agreeing with you because I would feel the same was if I was Betty's mother.

  4. I agree with you about Katherine. She was opening the girls minds up to new things. I feel like that is defiantly a good thing!
